Plasma separation techniques were tested more than a century ago, firstly in animal models, later they were introduced in human medicine. The advance of separation techniques led to broadening of the therapeutic indications and improving patient’s safety. This chapter briefly outlines the history of therapeutic apheresis (TA) and plasma exchange. The most important definitions used in apheresis today are presented.
