Mindful Data Stewardship
摘要
Mindful Data Stewardship integrates mindfulness principles into data, emphasizing human-centered relationships as a foundation for responsible practice. This paper builds on the experiences and insights gained through a methodology that comprised both a literature review and a one-day practical workshop conducted as part of a vocational training program in Data Stewardship in Western Switzerland. The goal was to combine theoretical and practical approaches to address different levels and aspects of data stewardship and to explore in practice how mindful relationships can be built in the context of a Data Steward at work. This approach was followed with a particular focus on cultivating mindful listening to both others and oneself. We used pre- and post-workshop questionnaires to assess participants’ attitudes and evaluate the impact of these practices. The findings highlighted how mindfulness can enhance listening skills, support an alternative, service-oriented approach to data stewardship, and identify key precautions to observe before, during, and after implementing mindfulness-based workshops. When these precautions are respected, embedding mindfulness into data stewardship can help develop a relational and responsive mindset, enabling research data management that moves beyond mere procedural compliance.
