Life is a molecular phenomenon whose feedstock consists of elements that on Earth include carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur (CHNOPS). Except for hydrogen, these elements derive from thermonuclear processes within evolving stars of differing masses. Once exhaled into the interstellar medium, they can join with one another to create the molecules that we have detected with our various telescopes.

摘要

Life is a molecular phenomenon whose feedstock consists of elements that on Earth include carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur (CHNOPS). Except for hydrogen, these elements derive from thermonuclear processes within evolving stars of differing masses. Once exhaled into the interstellar medium, they can join with one another to create the molecules that we have detected with our various telescopes.
