This study focuses on cooling potential of a green slab using local plant species. Plant species including Volkameria inermis; Cymbopogon citratus and Euphorbia tithymaloides were selected and tested on plywood patios topped with slabs in Kara, at the northern Togo. A preliminary study showed that a minimum thickness of 15 cm of substrate is required to ensure the survival and good growth of each of the candidate plants for greening. This thickness is used to test the three species on three slab roofs of the tested patios. The average Leaf Area Index LAI was estimated to 2.3; 3.0 and 3.8 respectively for V. inermis; C. citratus and E. tithymaloides. The results show that the three species installed on the different roofs stabilize the internal temperature by reducing peak temperatures. The avoided overheating can reach a maximum of 6.50 °C in the case of E. tithymaloides. The three species can be recommended for the greening of roofs in the Kara region and its surroundings.
