‘Wetland specialists’ and ‘Generalist’ aquatic birds rely on the wetlands for food, shelter, breeding or perching, completely or partially. Multinational governments are continually making efforts and signing treaties to save the deteriorating wetlands to sustain wetland-dependent birds. Major wetlands, including Ambuja Wetland in West Bengal and Perur-Sundakamuthur Lake in Coimbatore, are experiencing a decline in aquatic bird species because of wetland degradation. Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that establishes various principles, management strategies and guidelines for wetlands. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), in India, has initiated various campaigns and missions like the Amrit Dharohar Initiative and Mission Sahbhagita to engage local communities and authorities for the sustainable use of wetlands. There should be regional and national capacity-building programmes to strengthen wetland managers, people for their livelihood and other stakeholders. These programmes will help to save wetlands from degradation and thus help in protecting aquatic bird species.
