During the Renaissance, the more a language was ornate, precise and structured, the more revered and professional it was considered. Hence, not only did the art of rhetoric soon become one of the main requirements in grammar schools’ curricula, but the receiving end of ornamented discourses – such as listeners in trials, students at school or spectators in theatres – were very much accustomed to complex non-native terms and interchangeable alternatives in manipulated language.
