Hence, not only did the art of rhetoric soon become one of the main requirements in grammar schools’ curricula, but the receiving end of ornamented discourses – such as listeners in trials, students at school or spectators in theatres – were very much accustomed to complex non-native terms and interchangeable alternatives in manipulated language.
