Integration Approaches in Peri-Urban China

Taking peri-urban BeijingBeijing as a case study, this chapter conceptualised migrant integrationMigrant integration in urban ChinaUrban China, which suggested five core domains encompassing economic achievement, institutional attainment, social networksSocial networks, residential embeddedness, and place attachmentPlace attachment. A process of sociospatial restructuringSocio-spatial restructuring among the migrant population has appeared in China’s metropolises. Identifying who succeeded in the cities is not straightforward, as integration is a multi-dimensional process. This chapter found a coexistence of low-skilled and skilled migrantsSkilled migrants in urban ChinaUrban China with residential differentiationResidential differentiation. Such differentiation exacerbates the unequal situation between migrant residents, especially in terms of economic opportunities and social networksSocial networks, forming different integration paths. Therefore, the neighbourhoodNeighbourhood provides a new perspective for understanding migrant integrationMigrant integration, revealing how residential differentiationResidential differentiation and neighbourhood characteristics are associated. This complexity also underscores the need for detailed observations in different types of neighbourhoods.
