This chapter examines masks in science fiction works such as Star Wars films and Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two. It problematizes masks being used for merely depicting non-human and “alien” characters and the symbolic aspects behind characters such as Dark Vader and Harkonnen soldiers. Largely, the analysis focuses on the dark villains, Dark Vader in Star Wars and the Harkonnen family’s main characters Baron Harkonnen and Feyd-Rautha in Dune. These characters create a Faustian atmosphere, which however, is less dualistic in Dune compared to Star Wars due to the overarching cosmology and ethics in Star Wars. The esoteric sisterhood Bene Gesserit, whose members use veils, have an ambiguous character but the clothing represents hierarchical components.
