Earlier research has emphasized the initiatory and transformative aspects of masks and makeup. While some of these dimensions are highlighted in this book, the focus is rather on various functions and meanings of masks and mask-like makeup in different contents and contexts. For this broader examination, several key concepts are underlined in this introductory chapter. This is regarded as a point of departure rather than fixed theories that guide all parts of the analysis.
