The Wisdom of Temporal Perspectives
摘要
The wisdom of temporal perspectives encompasses both the capacity and the intentionality to consider past causes and future consequences when evaluating present situations to inform adaptive action. It is especially important in a complex world of challenges today. I propose in this chapter that, in contrast to a focus on here and now, temporal perspectives constitute a critical form of transformational wisdom that influences not only individual decision-making and well-being but also societal good and sustainability. I first outline the conceptual bases of this construct, highlighting its unique characteristics and functions. I then provide an overview of the developmental origins of temporal perspectives and discuss the theoretical and empirical relations between remembering the past and imagining the future. Further attention is paid to the role of the temporal perspective wisdom in understanding change and continuity and in perceiving progression and decline in personal and collective domains. I conclude the chapter by discussing the applications of the wisdom of temporal perspectives and the associated issues that hold consequences for individuals and societies.
