The ultimate goal of wisdom is to lead a meaningful and satisfying life while helping others to improve their lives as well. Wisdom is thus pertinent to sustainability, the pursuit of the long-term environmental, economic, and social viability of a community. As Taiwan has developed in the past 20 to 25 years, the problems of over-urbanization and a declining population in rural areas have become more severe. Taiwan’s rich biological and cultural diversity has been significantly reduced. In response to these problems, many Taiwanese have devoted themselves to regional revitalization, seeking to promote the development of communities in rural areas, as well as the well-being of community members. In this chapter, we explore wisdom displayed by individuals who have devoted themselves to regional revitalization, and whose work came in response to Taiwan’s Jiji earthquake on September 21, 1999. We also consider the possibility that a real-life display of wisdom may lead to transformational wisdom, wisdom that can change the world for the better.

摘要
