Transformational Wisdom Needs Support Systems and Structures: The Case of Current Politics
摘要
This chapter focuses on transformational wisdom in politics, arguing that democratic political systems are designed to foster wisdom in national leaders and governments. I first lay out characteristics of problems that require transformational wisdom, using climate change as my main example of such a problem. I then discuss how a wise political leader would deal with this type of problem, drawing on Glück and Weststrate’s (2022) elephant model of wise behavior. I next argue that the structure and institutions of modern democracies are, more or less intentionally, designed to enforce wise behavior in elected leaders. Unfortunately, however, something seems to have gone wrong. Using current U.S. President Donald Trump as an example, I argue that transformational unwisdom seems to be taking over many countries. I identify some structural/systemic reasons for this development, mostly related to the effects of large amounts of money on elections, politicians, and media. At the end of the chapter, I suggest some small ways we can try to counteract these developments as individuals. However, individual acts of wisdom are by far not sufficient. We need to collaborate across scientific fields and beyond academia to save our democracies and our planet for future generations.
