Teaching Materials as Language Policy Instruments: Insights from a Brazilian Textbook Series for Crisis Migrants
摘要
Teaching materials can act as powerful instruments of language policy, either reproducing or challenging hegemonic ideologies. Based on this principle, this chapter aims to discuss the role of teaching materials in crisis migration contexts in Brazil, considering that these devices can strongly impact teaching practices and even teaching conceptions. To this end, the focus will be on the Series Vamos Juntos(as)! Curso de Português como Língua de Acolhimento (Let’s go Together! Course of Portuguese as a Host Language). The first section presents a brief discussion on textbooks as language policy instruments and their role in Brazilian language policies for the teaching of Portuguese as a Host Language. Next, in the section Vamos Juntos(as)!, an overview of the series and a summary of its theoretical framework will be provided. An in-depth analysis of one of its units will also be conducted. Then, some impacts of the series in the Brazilian academic context will be discussed and some final considerations will be presented in the last section.
