The Situation of Overseas Chinese During the Cultural Revolution and the Immigration Status of Overseas Chinese Living in France (1966–1976)
摘要
In academic discussions regarding the history of French overseas Chinese during the Cultural Revolution, it is often oversimplified, treating the period from 1966 to 1976 as a single block. The common perspective suggests that ties between Chinese expatriates in France and their families in China were severed, with the families of overseas Chinese and returnees suffering severe persecution. However, this view oversimplifies the ten-year history of the Cultural Revolution. This chapter will reconstruct the history of the impact on overseas Chinese from Southern Zhejiang and their families during the tumultuous period of the Cultural Revolution, drawing on declassified government archives. It will also offer a more detailed periodization of the Cultural Revolution. Special emphasis will be placed on how, after 1970, the political faction led by Premier Zhou Enlai, upon regaining power, reinstated protective policies for overseas Chinese and how the Chinese community in France re-established contact with their relatives in China.
