The acceleration of adopting hybrid workHybrid work models is shaping organizational policies in adjusting their officeOffice space allocations. Recruiters now clarify workplace policies before hiring to ensure employees fully understand the company's stance on workplace arrangements and flexibility. With this new approach to organizational policies and culture, it's essential to explore how architectureArchitecture and technological innovations can shape the future of both physical and virtual officeOffice spaces. This chapter is dedicated to discussing the future of office space based on a mix of integrative and narrative review, with a focus on North America, in four key theme areas of employers’ and employees’ demand for office space, sustainability of future office space, and organisational policies shaping future office space. It examines the broad spectrum of office settings (including virtual offices) and employees’ preferences within the wider context of evolving work environments. A significant portion of this chapter discusses the potential stakeholder-driven emission dynamics associated with the future of offices, emphasizing how building performance and architectureArchitecture of future office spaces can impact organizational sustainability goals and shape the future of our cities. The findings suggest teleworkers prefer at least a touchdown space in the office. Furthermore, the results show some hybrid workers would prefer to still keep their dedicated officeOffice space. Although the range of workspace preferences is extensive, organizational policies have the potential to shape not only employees’ preferences and satisfaction but also the emissions and carbonCarbon footprint of an organization. The chapter also discusses how organizations can aim at reducing their emissions by utilizing different strategies, installing occupancy-based technologies, and implementing realistic portfolio reduction plans. These insights are invaluable to policymakers, strategists, real estate developers, teleworkers, and other stakeholders. Ultimately, the findings presented offer a meaningful step towards achieving the 2050 net-zeroNet-zero goals by integrating human-building interactionHuman-building interaction into the design and management of officeOffice spaces that shape the future of cities.
