This paper discusses the performance of vaults in a historic building. The Buontalenti palace was built in Florence in 1586. Nearly 100 vaults exist in this Renaissance-style three-storey palace. It has been under rehabilitation since 2021. The present research was performed during the rehabilitation. It consisted of two tasks. First, an ambient vibration test was carried out on two vaults. The test was performed, paying attention to the state of wall-vault connections and the contribution of the fillings and floor slabs over the vaults. Second, numerical analysis was performed to examine the performance of the vaults. Numerical models were calibrated based on the ambient vibration test. A uniformly distributed load was applied to the vault. The analysis also examined the retrofitting to be applied in the real structure. It showed the effectiveness of the anchors applied to the vault perimeters. The remarks from this study evaluate the performance of masonry vaults and suggest appropriate retrofitting approaches for vaults.
