Decision making is one of the critical processes for organizations that operate within the public sector. It has been noted that the use of technology to automate decisions in the public sector is increasing. This study, which adopted the systematic literature review method, aims to highlight how automated decision making can be adopted effectively in the public sector. Based on a thematic analysis of the consulted documents, the findings outline the opportunities, advantages and disadvantages associated with utilizing automated decision-making systems (ADMS) in the public sector. The findings also emphasise that AI should be used responsibly. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of developing and implementing policies to manage and mitigate the risks and disadvantages associated with utilizing ADMS in the public sector. The paper offers organizational and technology related recommendations and guidelines that may be considered for the adoption of ADMS in the public sector.
