At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Christina Graf, Claudia Neumann and Christina Rann were the first female commentators for all three broadcasting TV channels ARD, ZDF and MagentaTV. For this reason, a study was conducted to investigate, among other things, what characteristics good female TV football commentators should possess, how well known the commentators are among viewers and how the individual performance of Christina Graf, Claudia Neumann and Christina Rann was rated. An online survey was conducted among 1.386 people interested in football from all over Germany. The study looked at the aspects of live commentary as a journalistic style as well as gender studies in sports and communication science. The results show that only Claudia Neumann is recognized by the respondents on the basis of an unaided query. Neither Christina Graf nor Christina Rann were recognized by two thirds of the participants. The most important qualities of a good female TV football commentator are an understanding of the game and background knowledge, confidence with the rules and eloquence, while good looks play a subordinate role. In addition, the commentator performance of Christina Graf was rated best with an average grade of 2.83. She was followed by Christina Rann (grade 3.23) and Claudia Neumann (grade 3.38). However, it is also clear that male respondents rate female commentators significantly lower overall than female respondents.
