This study analyses the Twitter coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by six European Public Service Media (PSM) organizations. Findings reveal an extreme “footballization” of content, with the World Cup dominating 88% of posts, thereby marginalizing other sports, women athletes, and athletes with disabilities. Furthermore, the coverage largely overlooked critical human rights issues and socio-political controversies surrounding the event, with only isolated instances of critical commentary. The study concludes that this narrow agenda raises significant concerns about PSM’s role in fostering cultural citizenship and agenda diversity in the digital age, prioritizing event-centric coverage over democratic and inclusive discourse.
