Life-Based Learning in Primary and Secondary Education
摘要
Life-Based Learning (LBL) in primary and secondary education is an innovative approach that integrates real-world applications into the curriculum, aiming to prepare students for future challenges. This chapter examines the benefits and challenges of implementing LBL at these educational stages, highlighting the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. In primary education, LBL utilizes project-based learning, field trips, and experiential activities to engage students with hands-on tasks that enhance their understanding and foster interpersonal skills. For example, students might design a school garden or create a class play, directly applying knowledge from subjects like science, literature, and art. In secondary education, LBL shifts towards more complex, interdisciplinary projects, such as environmental sustainability or community development, encouraging students to engage with real-world problems and propose solutions. The chapter also discusses the role of Socratic dialogues in enhancing writing and critical thinking skills, where students reflect on real-world issues and engage in discussions that improve their reasoning and articulation. Despite its numerous advantages, the chapter highlights several challenges, including teachers’ reluctance to adopt new teaching methods and the lack of resources and support for implementing LBL effectively. Overall, the integration of LBL into primary and secondary education offers a dynamic and practical approach to learning that equips students with essential life skills and prepares them for success in the twenty-first-century workplace.
