Chapter 9 is about endings and leavings and how we help children and staff say goodbye. It looks at theory around loss and separation and the feelings we all grapple with. Many of the children described in the book will have had sudden and upsetting leavings and will not have experienced a good, coherent and meaningful ending. The chapter includes what we have learnt from placement breakdowns and unplanned endings. The final section focuses on leaving care and shares what it was like for two care experienced adults accessing their care records.
