EHRs, PHRs, and Patient Portals
摘要
This chapter explores four key technologies in modern healthcare: electronic medical records (EMRs), electronic health records (EHRs), personal health records (PHRs), and patient portals. Each system offers unique features that enhance how health information is recorded, stored, and accessed. EMRs are digital versions of paper charts confined to individual providers, while EHRs offer a comprehensive view of a patient’s health history, designed for sharing across multiple settings. PHRs empower patients to manage their own health data, promoting active engagement. Patient portals, linked to EHRs, provide secure online access to health information and interactive features like messaging providers and scheduling appointments. The chapter traces the evolution from paper records to digital systems, highlighting the shift toward interconnected and patient-centered care. It details the components of these technologies and provides real-world examples. The benefits, including improved care quality and efficiency, are examined alongside challenges such as privacy concerns, implementation costs, and interoperability issues. Interoperability is emphasized as crucial for seamless healthcare delivery, with future trends like AI integration, mobile health applications, and telehealth expansion discussed. Recommendations include enhancing interoperability, implementing robust security measures, and designing user-friendly interfaces. By addressing these areas, healthcare organizations can improve patient outcomes and overall healthcare delivery.
