Standards are essential in the field of health informatics to promote interoperability of health systems, aid in health research, promote patient-centered care, improve population health, and maintain privacy and security of health data. This chapter will review the importance of standards, types of standards, and standard development. Key health informatics standards and standard development organizations will be highlighted. Furthermore, the benefits of standards and challenges of standards development will be discussed.
