Consumer demand for convenience in healthcare service delivery has resulted in healthcare organizations offering more digital and virtual care services. This chapter provides an overview of virtual healthcare service delivery including terminology, virtual care conceptual model, and aspects of virtual care to provide enhanced care delivered in inpatient care settings through remote rounding, specialty consultations, and patient/family engagement; ambulatory and outpatient care using video visits, eVisits, and virtual second opinion consults; and clinical surveillance using remote patient monitoring, eSitters and virtual nursing. This chapter concludes with best practices and recommendations for successful implementation of virtual care models and a look at the future including the potential for innovative solutions in virtual healthcare.
