An introduction is provided into the use in this book of a “discursive” understanding of knowledge and its transmission across countries and epochs. Reflections are also made on changing references to the ancient rubric used to identify melancholia, before its gradual recognition as an illness related to the brain in the modern era rather than as understood exclusively within the humoral model of the body.
