SF and the Quest for Immortality: Isaac Asimov and ‘The Last Question’

By 1956, Isaac Asimov could be considered as the ‘default voice of science fiction’, with work such as ‘Nightfall’, the Foundation trilogy, and the positronic robot stories behind him. In this chapter we examine the story that he himself believed was his finest: ‘The last question’. We show how the story raises questions that are still relevant to science today.
