The Price of Blind Faith
摘要
This chapter considers events that happened during June 1956 in the following five domains: science and technology; politics, society and the economy; entertainment, arts, and culture; celebrity and famous names; and sport. Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: the development of Dijkstra’s algorithm for finding the shortest route between two cities; the launch of the alarm clock snooze button; a report from the Committee on the Biological Effects of Atomic Radiation that recommends the adoption of the linear no-threshold model for regulating nuclear radiation; the deadliest civil aviation disaster to date; and the establishment of the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.
