Islamophobia in the Future
摘要
This chapter explores the future trajectory of current Islamophobia, examining its roots and the evolving socio-political landscape that shapes its manifestations in response to technological advancements, geopolitical shifts, and societal changes. Islamophobia, characterized by irrational fear, hatred, and discrimination against Islam and Muslims, is increasingly influenced by advancements in emerging technologies. The future of Islamophobia is analyzed through the lens of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and social media, which both exacerbate and potentially mitigate the issue. Additionally, the chapter discusses the role of far-right ideologies, such as the “Great Replacement” theory, in shaping anti-Muslim sentiment and fuel societal divisions and exacerbate fear-based perceptions. AI algorithms, while capable of detecting hate speech, also accelerate the spread of Islamophobic narratives through the amplification of misinformation, political narratives, cultural biases and deepfake content. The intersection of identity, migration, global warming, and conflicts further perpetuates stereotypes, impacting mental health and social cohesion for both Muslims and non-Muslims. Through a speculative dialogue across time between historical philosophers Averroes and Maimonides transported in the future, the chapter underscores the importance of dialogue, reason, and inclusive policies in countering Islamophobia. Emphasizing the role of education, advocacy, grassroots movements, and technological accountability, it calls for a collective effort to combat fear and foster understanding in an increasingly interconnected world and a more inclusive society.
