Anxiety and Islamophobia: Impact on Muslim Mental Health and Therapeutic Approaches
摘要
Islamophobia—the prejudice and discrimination against Islam and Muslims—has profound implications for mental health, particularly in triggering and exacerbating anxiety within Muslim communities. This chapter explores how Islamophobia acts as a chronic stressor that heightens anxiety, fear, and psychological distress. It draws on classical Islamic texts (the Quran and Hadith) that validate the human experience of anxiety and offer hope and guidance, as well as contemporary research linking discrimination to anxiety disorders. The chapter also reviews culturally responsive interventions such as Islamically integrated psychotherapy—which merges evidence-based techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with Islamic spiritual coping strategies—to address these challenges. Ultimately, the chapter emphasizes the need for culturally competent care in supporting the mental health of Muslims.
