How and Why Podcasts Are Used in Medical Education
摘要
Podcasts are produced by academics to get around constraints of the typical academic model and have been adopted in medical education in a diverse fashion. This has ranged from individual, institutional, journal and commercial endeavors. Over time podcasts have taken on more formal roles. Medical journals in particular have a long history of producing podcasts with the potential to increase the reach of the journals. Institutions have used them both for educational and promotional reasons. Podcasts are highlighted by users for their accessibility at times when other learning cannot occur and as a tool for getting information. Residents also use podcasts to connect with, or feel a part of, their specialty communities. Attending physicians are a substantial portion of listeners to medical education podcasts though rarely claim CME credits associated. Listeners often use podcasts in time that they would not otherwise be able to study such as driving and some limited data suggest this type of multitasking does not hurt educational outcomes. This chapter reviews the application of podcasts in medical education including, who is making medical education podcasts, data on the impact of journal and society podcasts, undergraduate and graduate applications of podcasts, and preferences and practices of listeners.
