Playing by Ear: Advancements in Sound-Based Game Accessibility
摘要
Video games have cemented their role as an influential cultural force, shaping experiences and communities across the world. However, there is a lack of accessibility features for blind players, denying this group access to an important part of culture. To address this issue, we are developing an accessible framework for the Unreal Engine, designed specifically to streamline the process of creating audio-centric experiences for blind players. This approach seeks to establish a new standard in accessibility, underscoring the idea that games, when designed with inclusion in mind, can change lives for the better. By integrating sound-based navigational mechanics, we found that players could successfully navigate game environments without relying on visual elements. The results suggest that the system successfully enhances navigation and engagement for blind players, providing a solid foundation for further development and refinement, aligning well with the goal of improving accessibility in gaming.
