Using Edutainment in Interior Architecture and Design Pedagogy: A Tool for Cultural Heritage Awareness
摘要
Edutainment in interior architecture and design (IAD) pedagogy is fertile, currently being exploited in history-themed courses to match the changing pace of today’s students who thrive on the immediate gratification of digital platforms (Suryana et al., 2022). Educators are confronted with using these platforms to engage students (Nanclares & Garicia, 2024). However, they are obligated to bring them back to the reality of the physical dimension in which IAD resides, by exploring cultural heritage sites. In Egypt, the issue is twofold; many students are unaware of their rich, diverse and layered heritage. Furthermore, most sites do not use targeted advertising on platforms that today’s generation uses. This research aims to investigate the potential of edutainment as a learning tool to engage students in an attempt to apply the heritage cycle. Consequently, raising awareness of the importance and diversity of Egypt’s cultural heritage and in hand promoting its preservation. This is through a qualitative exploratory approach of a single case study in a history-themed course for year 1 IAD students at Coventry University, Egypt. A literature review provides the theoretical grounding, while primary data collected using multiple methods validate the study findings. The study reveals that Edutainment is an innovative tool for IAD curricula. It is successful in creating an engaging learning environment facilitating cultural heritage awareness. It serves students’ knowledge acquisition and is the first steppingstone to heritage preservation. It can be utilised to establish a connection between today’s generation and their heritage, which is the foundation to instigate future societal change towards preservation.
