The Role of the Algerian Government and NGOs in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Architecture in Casbah Algeria
摘要
Historic urban areas in the Arab world, including Algeria, face significant challenges due to rapid economic development, population growth, and evolving lifestyles. These areas, once thriving cultural and economic hubs, now also serve as shelters for migrants while maintaining their productivity. Algeria, known for its rich cultural and natural heritage, is home to a diverse collection of archaeological, architectural, and urban treasures, including ancient cities, remnants of medinas such as Algiers and Tlemcen, Ksour, and numerous colonial-era buildings. The Casbah of Algiers is particularly notable for its historical and symbolic significance, showcasing the legacy of various civilizations, especially Berber and Ottoman influences. This medina, with its architectural and cultural heritage, is a testament to Algiers’ historical importance and served as the residence of the bays and pashas. The architectural landscape of the Casbah, preserving its past grandeur, remains a crucial part of Algeria’s cultural identity. This paper explores the challenges faced by historic urban areas in Algeria in meeting contemporary needs while preserving their unique heritage, focusing on the Casbah of Algiers and its architectural legacy. Recognizing the high value of cultural heritage to individuals and communities, the research highlights its role in promoting social cohesion and contributing to the preservation of architectural heritage. Additionally, regions rich in cultural heritage benefit from environmental enhancements that accentuate the uniqueness of these places. The study also investigates the role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in preserving the valuable heritage of the Casbah of Algiers.
