Integrating Heritage Conservation and Modern Urban Planning: Revitalizing Uqba Bin Nafi Square in As-Salt
摘要
This study explores the historical and cultural significance of Uqba Bin Nafi Square in As-Salt, Jordan, highlighting the importance of preserving historical public spaces while integrating modern urban planning. A descriptive-analytical approach was employed, incorporating field observations, spatial analysis, and user engagement studies to assess the square’s current condition and design limitations. The findings indicate that landscape design improvements, such as optimized pedestrian pathways, shaded seating areas, enhanced lighting, and efficient waste management, can significantly enhance accessibility, visitor experience, and cultural identity while maintaining the site’s historical integrity. Additionally, this study emphasizes the role of community engagement and participatory urban planning in ensuring the long-term conservation and adaptive reuse of historical spaces. It contributes to heritage conservation strategies by proposing a conceptual framework that balances cultural preservation with sustainable urban development. This research is a proposed study aimed at community participation in collaboration with the Municipality of As-Salt and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, ensuring that interventions align with local needs and historical conservation efforts. The findings offer insights applicable to similar historical landscapes, supporting policymakers, urban planners, and conservationists in creating functional, inclusive, and historically conscious public spaces. Future research should explore smart urban technologies, sustainable materials, and long-term conservation strategies to enhance the resilience and usability of heritage sites.
