Understanding Historic Urban Landscapes via Urban Patterns Analysis
摘要
Understanding urban morphology is essential to understanding the characteristics and layers of meaning embedded within cityscapes. Research on urban morphology has significantly contributed to developing an urban architecture approach, which considers the spatial arrangement of historic cities and the context of their urban fabric. This approach seeks to comprehend the physical formation of cities by scrutinizing their development, processes of change, and spatial structures. Understanding the physical formation of cities hinges on grasping their geometric properties. The urban environment encapsulates its residents’ past and present efforts and aspirations, reflected in its physical manifestations such as street layout, buildings, and spatial utilization. The built form of a city is a product of human creation, and its physical attributes mirror the evolving needs of people across different epochs. A crucial aspect of effective townscape management lies in comprehending the evolutionary trajectory of the townscape. This physical embodiment captures the essence of the place, known as the spirit of the place or genius loci. To this end, the Yukarı Neighborhood in Akçakoca Town in Düzce Province (Türkiye) was selected as the research area, which is a historic urban landscape comprising listed traditional houses and is classified as an urban protected area. In this context, the historical texture of the Yukarı neighborhood is attempted to be revealed by analyzing the building, street patterns, and plot patterns of the settlement area with qualitative data. Morphological analyses were conducted to comprehend the historic urban landscape, revealing transformations over time through comparative studies. This paper seeks to identify various urban patterns associated with distinct eras in the neighborhood’s history.
