The focus of this research study is to examine the impact of talent management on achieving a competitive edge in the public sector, specifically in the Department of Health in the North-West Province of Ngaka Modiri Molema. Talent management is crucial for organisations to attract, retain, and develop skilled and talented individuals, thereby contributing to the organisation’s success and competitiveness. In this dynamic and competitive business era, organisations face talent management challenges. Talent management of talented workers is becoming of great importance for organisations working on a global level. The demand for key position talented employees is high because those are the persons who will steer the organisation and be responsible for taking the organisation towards the peak of success; this is why organisations are fighting for the best people. The primary goal of every organisational strategy is to enhance the operation’s effectiveness and efficiency, which could lead the organisation to success. Talent management is essential when organisations wish to build winning teams which will be formed by talented personnel. The study explores various theories, models, and components related to talent management. It highlights the importance of investing in talent management and talent strategies for acquiring and developing a talented workforce in public organisations. The research method involved qualitative interviews with seven HR employees and managers in management positions from the Department of Health in the North-West Province. The data collected was analysed using thematic analysis to identify common themes. The study results showed that talent management is essential for attracting, selecting, retaining, and developing individuals to meet organisational goals. Still, the Department of Health in the North-West Province lacks proper talent management methods. The findings also indicated that public organisations face challenges in talent management, particularly inefficient hiring practices.
