An Analysis of the Lukan Jesus and Ethnicity, and Its Impact on Socio-Economic Development in Mutasa District
摘要
This article focuses on how the Lukan Jesus addressed problems associated with race and ethnicity and its impact on socio-economic development in the Mutasa district. The gravity of the issues of ethnicity and race is evident in controversies which arisen between Jewish authorities and Lukan Jesus over his association with outcasts (especially gentiles). The Lukan Jesus openly exposes this racial animosity in some of his parables, such as that of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25–37). The Jews subscribe to the election motif which considered themselves as a chosen race (Ex 19:5; Deut 7:6–8, 14:2). From a social scientific perspective, this philosophy was one of the major factors which caused socio-political, economic and religious challenges on how the Jews interacted with other ethnic groups/races resulting in ethnic segregation, racial injustices and other ills. However, the Lukan Jesus brought a paradigm shift through a radical sense of inclusion of aliens (gentiles) in his mission. He promoted unity, justice of the oppressed (especially on racial/ethnic grounds) in his teachings and deeds. This article, therefore, draws lessons from Jesus’ approach in transforming his contemporary society’s perspective on ethnicity and race towards the socio-economic and political development issues in Mutasa district, Zimbabwe. The article concludes that the modus operandi of the Lukan Jesus has a positive impact on the social-economic development of Mutasa district and beyond, for it promotes unity of purpose, justice, love and tolerance among ethnic and racial groups.
