Blockchain and Digital Product Passports in Marketing: Building Consumer Trust and Communicating Sustainability
摘要
The prevalence of greenwashing and increasing regulatory requirements have intensified the need for mechanisms that ensure the verifiability of sustainability claims (Lashitew in J. Int. Bus. Policy 4:184–200, 2021). In response to the European Union’s Green Deal and the increasing regulatory emphasis on sustainable production, Digital Product Passports (DPPs) have been introduced as tools to collect and share comprehensive product information across all lifecycle stages (Canciani et al. in Enhancing Supply Chain Transparency through Blockchain Product Passports, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc, pp. 751–756, 2004). When supported by blockchain technology, DPPs ensure data immutability, transparency and verifiability, enabling stakeholders to trace product sustainability credentials, enhance consumer trust and support credible green marketing strategies (Berger et al. in J. clean. Prod. 353,131492, 2004). This study evaluates the potential of blockchain and DPPs to mitigate credibility risks in sustainability communication and proposes a conceptual framework for their integration into marketing practices. The methodology combines a structured literature review covering 2021–2025 with particular attention to applications in high-impact sectors such as batteries and electronic. Findings indicate that blockchain adoption offers key benefits, including immutable data recording, enhanced traceability and verifiable compliance with environmental standards. However, challenges remain regarding interoperability, implementation costs and alignment with evolving regulations. The proposed framework synthesizes insights from the literature, systematically mapping the links between technological enablers, verifiable sustainability metrics and marketing outcomes. By articulating these interconnections, the study advances academic understanding, offering a roadmap for leveraging blockchain and DPPs to achieve credible, transparent and trust-enhancing green marketing.
