This Chapter uses a narrative approachNarrative approach as an urban methodology to uncover significant hidden matters affecting how communities develop a sense of belonging to their living place, using two case studies YazdYazd in Iran and LondonLondon in England. The overall aim is to provide better urban policiesUrban policy and design which can be more sensitive to locals’ needs and wishes. Advocating the narrative approachNarrative approach and citizen participationCitizen participation in urban designUrban design projects, the selected cases are discussed and compared in detail. In the case of Yazd, it is argued that insights can be gained from the inhabitants’ life stories of the selected neighbourhoods to inform future urban designUrban design projects, whereas in the case of London, local narratives were studied and used to revitalise a local parkLocal park. The chapter invites rethinking the notion of citizen participation in urban designUrban design projects. By shedding light on how the cases of YazdYazd in Iran and LondonLondon in the UKUK were connected and chosen for this study, the Chapter also exemplifies how academia and practice can inform each other.
