Dance in Public Space: An Intangible Cultural Heritage Facing Oblivion in Iranian Cities
摘要
Iranian danceIranian dance, in its many forms, is a means of expressing individual and collective thoughts and feelings of Iranian society, reflecting beliefs, history, cultures and climatic conditions, performed in rhythmic and harmonic body movements. It is purposeful and deliberative with structured and narrative content in a creative process and is an intangible heritage of this ancient civilisation. Being an ancient estate and in the middle of the Silk Roads, the cultural diversity in Iran is manifested by various folk dances and rhythmic group performances, with themes around occupation, epic and battle, religious and mythology, healing, imitation and show, pleasure and joy. There are also commonly practiced dances across the country regardless of those diversities. However, in recent decades, dance performance in Iran has been encountering multiple restrictions and challenges, ranging from official and institutional to unofficial and traditional. These have caused damage and historical discontinuity in this manifestation of Iran’s rich culture, which may lead to the forgetting of dance, especially group dances, in cities. Bringing together urban and dance studies, this study addresses heritage values of Iranian danceIranian dance and explores Iranian group dance performances in urban public spacesPublic space, representing the diversity of communities’ collective cultural expressions in the country. The chapter introduces potential opportunities and capacities and offers recommendations. It ultimately contributes to preserving dance as an art form and bringing it to urban life.
