Theft of farm produce in developing countries has become a significant issue in recent years, particularly in rural areas where the population relies on small-scale subsistence farming. A recent concern in Kenya is the theft of potatoes from farmers. The impact of potato theft on local farmers is severe, threatening their already precarious livelihoods, resulting in economic losses from premature harvest or lost produce. Additionally, there are extra financial costs as farmers are forced to hire guards to safeguard their crops or to harvest the farm produce prematurely. This chapter explores the problem of potato theft, a neglected area in the study of agricultural crime, to encourage discussion and prompt rural criminologists to conduct further research on this topic.
