Human Trafficking in Nigeria
摘要
The chapter explores some of the drivers and mechanisms of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT), including the role of organised crime and ‘Cults’ as it manifests itself in rural Edo based on observations and interactions in the region, between 2016 and 2020. It then goes on to consider one set of responses to this criminal activity through an exploration of the work of the Catholic Church and a community-based charity ‘GrowEdo’, which works within rural communities in the hinterland of Benin City to tackle MSHT. This will highlight the risks such community activities must endure to tackle this trade in humans.
