Streets’ pavements strongly contribute to the quality of the urban and built environments. The collective interest for such a qualifying permanence of the past has grown considerably in recent years. That is for the value of the historical and traditional architecture but also for urban environment in general that has preserved a character sedimented over the centuries. Traditional pavements are recognized as playing a leading role in qualifying the urban fabric and environment. Unfortunately, nowadays, the use of asphalt in the historic city is a main cause of urban degradation generating a negative image of the city that neither enhances the historical fabric nor demonstrates a desire to protect the architectural heritage. This paper discusses the typological features of the historical pavements in the village of Vita, intended as a valuable case study, from materials to construction techniques, with special attention to the characteristics of individual technical elements. Vita is an inland municipality in Sicily, in Trapani province, subject to abandonment phenomena due to the scarcity of job opportunities, and the lack in infrastructures and services. The objective of this contribution is to collect a catalogue of information on the types and construction techniques of Vita’s historical pavements, constituting a document useful for the municipality, scholars or professional working on traditional technologies and the infrastructural system for recovery or redevelopment projects.
