Bravery in the Anthropocene: Leading with Moral Purpose for Tomorrow
摘要
We are living in the Anthropocene, a geological age in which human activity is the dominant force shaping our planet’s climate, security, and shared future. Within this context, the Values in Action (VIA) framework identifies bravery as a vital character strength. Bravery is not simply a singular act of heroism, but a leadership capacity that enables people to pause, reflect, and act with clarity in environments of uncertainty. In this chapter, we explore bravery as a strength cultivated across levels, from personal resolve and interpersonal courage to team dynamics, organizational leadership, and civic responsibility. Drawing on military command, academic leadership, operational experience, and scholarship on self-efficacy, moral courage, and authentic leadership, we offer a framework for how leaders can build the moral muscle to act with integrity in both everyday and extraordinary moments. Bravery thus becomes a compass for decision-making and a catalyst for transformative leadership in the Anthropocene.
