AI and Workforce for Public Health

Artificial intelligence (AI) in public health depends on the evolution of the public health workforce in the AI era. This chapter addresses the urgency to prepare and adapt the workforce for the use of AI in public health. It explores strategies for workforce development, first highlighting the need for continuous education and upskilling of the current public health workforce. Second, the reform of public health curricula to include AI literacy and advanced topics. New courses include adopting innovative pedagogical approaches, such as “meta-AI homework,” designed to teach students how to interact with and evaluate AI outputs critically. Finally, the chapter examines the evolving role of public health informatics education, where students will design, evaluate, and ethically govern AI applications. This chapter discusses the educational reform necessary for the public health workforce of the future.
