Female Crossroads: Ana’s “Confluence” and the Construction of “In-Between” Space in Terrapreta
摘要
Adolescent and urban, Ana, the protagonist of the novel Terrapreta (Rita Carelli 2021), moves in with her father in an indigenous village in the Alto Xingu. She begins to live in a space of in-betweenness. Ana’s process of crossing boundaries mirrors that of the author; both guide the reader to this space and allow us, as a people, to dream of non-colonial relationships, making visible struggles and sharing knowledge. In this paper, we explore how Terrapreta weaves points of geographical, temporal, and cultural convergence in the construction of both subjective and collective identity, starting from a place of non-belonging. We examine how the novel intertwines the concepts of culture, fragmented time, and in-betweenness as discussed by Bhabha (2013), and the experimentation with alternative forms of love in the decolonization of affect as proposed by Núñez (2023).
