Artificial Intelligence in Electronic Journalism: Innovation Horizons and Ethical Challenges
摘要
Artificial intelligence technologies are becoming an increasingly dominant force in content production within the journalism industry and have made tasks such as news and information gathering, analysis and verification before publication much more efficient. Despite the benefits these technologies provide, they have brought with them ethical issues to Jordanian journalists, particularly in a country where no press ethics code built up to suit these new habits thus raise media ethical problems. Organized as such, the study investigates the nexus between AI ethics and journalism challenges, based on the theory of social responsibility. It follows a descriptive research approach with survey design to get an insight from 103 Jordanian journalists about the AI ethical challenges when using AI technologies. The research revealed that AI tools are driving changes in journalistic attitudes, mainly because of the lack of clear ethical regulations on their use. It stresses that an ethical baseline would necessitate the validation of information stemming from AI tools before it gets published, which also sounds analogous to journalistic duties such as maintaining neutrality while reporting news based on AI, in addition to placing the public interest above spectacle mongering. The most important issues in this regard are the lack of clarity with respect to the sources of these data on which these technologies operate, worries about privacy safeguards and the absence of common ethical standards that can be implemented across news sites. The research highlights the importance of AI-generated content to be rigorously validated and ethically scrutinized for truthfulness and accountability before it is distributed.
