Myra Levine, with the Levine Conservation Model (LCM), is known for maintaining holistic patient care, conserving energy, structural integrity, personal integrity and social integrity. The purpose of this integrative review is to examine the effect of the LCM on patient outcomes in a variety of health care settings. This review attempted to summarize what is currently known about the effectiveness of the model in producing positive patient outcomes such as improved quality of care, higher patient satisfaction, reduced complications and so forth. A systematic search strategy was utilized to review multiple databases, including PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus and the most recent relevant studies published in the last decade. The findings show that the use of LCM helps create individualized patient care plans, encourages energy conservation and enhances patient views on the nursing care provided. Moreover, the evidence also suggests that LCM implementation improves interdisciplinary communication and solving the patients’ needs in a culture sensitive way. Nevertheless, implementation of fidelity varies across studies and rarely uses robust outcome measures which limit generalizability. The review recommends that assessments of the model’s efficacy in different clinical settings utilize more rigorous studies with standardized measures to rate the model. Despite these limitations, the LCM is a helpful framework, as a framework to guide nursing practice, especially in contexts where patient-centered and holistic care is emphasized. The effects of the model on future patient centered outcomes such as functional recovery, psychological well-being and quality of life should be evaluated in future research. Leveraging the LCM principles for nursing education and practice will make a difference in the quality of care provided through evidence-based care and positive patient experience.
