Beyond the conceptual problems of political scientists studying operational codes identified in Chap. 2 , quantitative and theoretical efforts are analyzed. The main quantitative problem is that word counting (content analysis) is statistically reliable but has not been properly validated. Nevertheless, quantitative efforts have thus far been similar to qualitative efforts, though neither based on participant observation or process tracing.
