Principles and Processes of Mentoring Relationships
摘要
This chapter offers a personal reflection on my journey into mentoring, beginning with an unplanned transition from early childhood education to university teaching. Prompted by a request and mentoring from a former professor, Dr. Emilla Tschanz, I stepped into a teaching role that evolved into a deeply meaningful mentoring relationship. Through narrative and reflection, the chapter reveals how mentoring can emerge naturally through trust, openness/vulnerability, and genuine human connection. Core elements of mentoring, including reflective practice, active listening, ethical responsibility, and fostering a growth mindset, are explored both through personal anecdotes and supporting scholarship. I emphasize that mentoring is not a standardized process; rather, it adapts to each mentee’s needs and is built on mutual respect and emotional safety. The chapter ultimately underscores how mentoring can be transformative for both mentor and mentee, encouraging personal and professional development through empathy, trust, and a shared commitment to learning and growth.
